Google Digs Up Old Direct-Sales Nexus Strategy May 16, 2012
Two years after its initial attempt to sell Nexus smartphones directly to consumers flopped, Google is apparently trying to revive the strategy. This time, though, it's added a few new touches. It's going to work with up to five device manufacturers at a time to create a portfolio of Nexus-line devices that include smartphones and tablets.

Rumored Merger Could Give T-Mobile a Shot in the Arm May 10, 2012
Deutsche Telekom is rumored to be pursuing a merger between T-Mobile and MetroPCS Communications. How the merger may be executed appears to be a moving target at the moment. It could take the form of a stock-swap, giving Deutsche Telekom control of the combined entity, or it could be an initial public offering. Deutsche Telekom reportedly is considering an outright sale of T-Mobile as well.

Sprint's New Tri-Fi Hotspot Finds a Signal Any Which Way It Can May 10, 2012
Sprint is launching a new type of mobile hotspot -- the Sierra Wireless 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot, the first device that will convert LTE, WiMAX and 3G networks into a WiFi signal. Via the portable device, users can access three networks -- Sprint's CDMA 3G network, its WiMax 4G network and its upcoming LTE 4G network.

Big Red Picks Color for New Video Venture May 07, 2012
Verizon Wireless has reportedly entered a multi-year partnership with Color, the mobile social network company launched last year by serial entrepreneur Bill Nguyen of Lala fame. Research In Motion's investors did not seem pleased with the company's latest endeavor, BlackBerry 10, which CEO Thorsten Heins unveiled at its BlackBerry World 2012 conference in Orlando, Fla., earlier this week. Nokia Fires Volley of Patent Lawsuits at Competitors May 02, 2012
Nokia announced Wednesday that it has filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission against HTC, as well as lawsuits in the U.S. and Germany against Research In Motion and Viewsonic, claiming the three firms violated a total of 45 patents. The patents in question cover a variety of hardware inventions and software features.

Samsung's first quarter earnings suggest that it has reached a significant milestone: It could be the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, topping Apple in market reach. In this case, "suggest" is the operative word. "As you know, Samsung doesn't give their cellphone shipment numbers," said Azita Arvani of the Arvani Group, "and analysts have differing opinions on how many Samsung smartphones were actually shipped."

Sprint's Q1 Losses Come With Some Glimmers of Hope April 25, 2012
Mobile carrier Sprint Nextel reported deep losses amounting to $863 million in the first quarter of this year, but the company's results actually beat Wall Street expectations. And since it began offering Apple's iPhone as of last October, Sprint added a net 263,000 subscribers. However, this has come at a price. To acquire the iPhone, Sprint agreed to a $15.5 billion deal with Apple to carry the handset over the next four years.

Motorola Bests Apple in Patent Skirmish April 25, 2012
In an initial determination, International Trade Commission judge Thomas Pender ruled that Apple was violating one of Motorola Mobility's patents for 3G wireless technology. Specifically, the ruling cited a patent that was issued to Motorola in 2001 for a "method and system for generating a complex pseudonoise sequence for processing a code division multiple access signal."
The ITC ruling is a setback for Apple.

Apple Blows Wall Street's Mind Again April 25, 2012
Apple announced yet another fiscal quarter that made Wall Street's head spin, sending shares skyward in after-hours trading. Revenue was up 59 percent for Apple, bringing in $39.2 billion compared to the $24.67 billion it reporter a year earlier. The tech giant reported quarterly earnings Tuesday of $12.30 per share.
