Another front may be opening in the battle for mobile platform supremacy. Microsoft is rumored to be planning to launch its own mobile application store. If the buzz is true, Microsoft may not be as late to the party as some would think. Android hasn't yet debuted. Apple, for its part, is facing push-back on many fronts. Ironically, Microsoft is positioned between Google's open source strategy and Apple's controlled environment -- an unlikely and uncomfortable place for the software giant to find itself. [More...]

Search engine giant Google has begun testing video ads on its mobile version of YouTube in the U.S. and Japan. The move is an attempt by the Mountain View, Calif.-based search engine to monetize YouTube's video ad potential. Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in October 2006. [More...]

Now that mobile tech titans Nokia and Qualcomm have ended a series of long-standing patent disputes, Qualcomm chief executive Paul Jacobs says he sees "opportunities across the board" for cooperation with his company's former foe. Yahoo has inked a deal with Publicis Groupe's newly announced VivaKi Nerve Center that will provide clients of the France-based communications company with more targeted and personalized advertising options to maximize global opportunities for mobile ads, the companies announced Wednesday. The Voice Commerce Group has announced the development of a banking system that will enable the use of biometrics-based "voice signatures."
