Samsung Dodges Another Apple Patent Bullet
December 22, 2011
A judge in Dusseldorf, Germany, has reportedly issued a preliminary ruling stating that minor tweaks Samsung made to its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet's design mean the device no longer violates Apple's European patents on the iPad. That means, in essence, that Samsung can continue selling the redesigned tablet, designated the "Galaxy Tab 10.1N," in the European market.
Apple Gets Gruff About Giveaway Guidelines
June 03, 2011
Apple is stepping up enforcement of guidelines that it issued in January restricting giveaways or third-party promotions of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Chief among these: iPad, iPhone and iPhone gift cards may not be used in any such promotions or sweepstakes; iPod touch cards may be used, but only if 250 have been purchased. Apple also frowns on using the word "free" in conjunction with its brand.

Will the Tablet Follow the PC Path or the iPod Way?
May 02, 2011
There is this debate going on in the analyst community with most arguing that the tablet market is like the PC market was, and Apple will once again be overwhelmed -- in this case largely by Google and Android. But a few of us, mostly me, are arguing that it is behaving much more like the iPod market, and Apple will emerge preeminent unless something big changes.
Apple Sticks It to the DIY Repairman
March 04, 2011
People have always had an interest in repair. Haynes Manuals helped pave the road for today's do-it-yourself industry more than 50 years ago, providing people with written instructions on how to take apart their cars. Repairs can be taxing and frustrating, especially when the manufacturing company focuses on style and assembly, and not disassembly.
Is Apple Drifting to the Wrong Path?
February 07, 2011
History is filled with stories of companies that dominated their segment and then either fell from that high spot or fell off the map. RCA is probably the best example of a firm that went from dominance to obsolescence because, in its case, it played chicken with the U.S. government and lost. A lot of us think the iPad is unstoppable, but just because you believe in a thing doesn't mean that thing is true.
Samsung Rounds Out Its Android Universe With Galaxy Player
December 28, 2010
Samsung is about to debut the new Galaxy Player, an Android-based music and applications device that will be similar to the Galaxy S smartphone, but without the cellular connection. Samsung has confirmed it will unveil the media player at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month, according to Samsung follower, Samsung Hub.

iPad Gets a Little iPhonier
November 22, 2010
Apple released iOS 4.2 on Monday, managing to put the update in users' hands within the month of November. Some users, however, had expected the completed iPhone, iPad and iPod touch update to be released earlier this month. The delays were reportedly due to bugs that required fixing. The latest release of Cupertino's mobile device operating system incorporates several new features.
2011 iOS Preview for Apple Universe Stargazers
October 29, 2010
It is not likely Apple will announce any more updates to iOS devices in 2010 (beyond the actual release of iOS 4.2 in November) -- so this means, of course, that it is time for a preview of what updates there will be in the iOS universe in 2011. These predictions come from an analysis of Apple's own words and actions, along with consideration of what new technologies are available.

Apple Gives Devs One iOS to Rule Them All
September 16, 2010
A new version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 4.2, was made available to developers recently. Although many of the new features in the OS have already been made public by the company, one was a revelation: wireless printing. The new feature, which Apple's calling "AirPrint," allows the iPad, iPhone and iPhone touch to find a printer on a wireless network and print text, photos and graphics.
iOS Upgrade Slides In, Jailbreakers Bust Out
September 09, 2010
As promised last week, Apple delivered the first major upgrade of its mobile operating system, version 4.1 of iOS, and true to form, hackers found a way to jailbreak the software less than 24 hours following its official release. The major fun features of iOS 4.1 were revealed last week when Apple rolled out its latest line of iPods.

AAPL May Yield a Bumper Crop This Fall
September 08, 2010
Though it may be some time before AAPL shares again reach the record-setting heights they saw last June, they appear to have made modest gains over the last week. Shares closed Tuesday at US$257.81, down 96 cents for the day but up about $10 since Sept. 1. Meanwhile, Sony has demoed a prototype Google TV at the IFA 2010 consumer electronics show in Berlin.
HP's Wallet-Busting Win
September 03, 2010
The insane tug-of-war between Dell and HP for enterprise storage company 3Par has finally drawn to a close. We have a winner, if you want to call it that -- the final sale price is more than double the figure Dell initially put forward when it announced its intentions to buy 3Par a couple weeks ago, so who knows how much of that is real value and how much is just financial one-upsmanship.

Apple Teaches Old iPods New Tricks
September 02, 2010
Apple put a charge in its iPod line Wednesday, but it remains a holdout in the "all you can ear" music subscription market. Apple revamped its flagship player, the iPod touch, so it's now essentially an iPhone without the phone. It also brought buttons back to the iPod shuffle and a touchscreen to the iPod nano.
Will Wednesday's Big Show Put More Spring in AAPL's Step?
September 01, 2010
Shares of Apple closed up 60 cents on Tuesday to hit $243.10. However, Cupertino is still smarting from the downward spiral of the past few weeks, when its stocks took a beating along with the rest of the market. The Dow on Tuesday recovered a fraction of what it lost after a Monday drubbing, and the Nasdaq fell nearly six points.

What iPods May Come
August 31, 2010
Apple first introduced its iconic white iPod in the fall of 2001, then gave it the technology buddy it needed -- the iTunes store -- in the spring of 2003, which was when I bought my first iPod. It was heavy, a third-generation unit with a built-in spinning hard drive and four buttons across the middle, and it irrevocably changed the way I consumed and listened to music.
So You Want to Be a Jailbreaker?
August 05, 2010
I wrote part of this article while flying with my four-year-old son. I saw something on the flight I thought was funny -- on the package of peanuts it said "Ingredients: Peanuts Roasted in Peanut and/or Canola Oil, Salt." Then the line right below that "Produced in a facility that processes peanuts and other nuts." Really? The peanuts were processed in a facility that processes peanuts? Who would have thunk?
