In a move that will certainly win me no friends at Apple, I simply can't in good conscience recommend the iPhone 3G to existing iPhone customers. Don't get me wrong. I have an iPhone 3G myself, and I upgraded from my existing iPhone, and I love both. As I've mentioned before, once you go iPhone, you never go back. Still, there are only a few situations where it makes sense to upgrade from iPhone to iPhone 3G -- and what's more, there are several reasons why you shouldn't.

I too upgraded from the original iPhone to the 3G iPhone. I could not be more pleased.
Simply, the 3G iphone is a better phone. Its sound capabilities are impressive compared to the iPhone. Calls come loud and clear. The 3G speaker sounds so much better and louder now, I can finally use the speaker phone. And I don't have to shout to be heard; folks on the other end can finally hear me without me shouting. Also, music and sound effects coming through the 3G speaker while playing games or watching podcasts give me a superior multimedia experience.
It is true that 3G is not as fast as the hype would have you believe. Wi-Fi beats 3G soundly no doubt. But the 3G gives me a much stronger signal, and better reception. And as much as I am on the internet on the G3, the added speed is still a godsend. I mean, it is a godsend.
I got a white iPhone - it is stunning. I love the narrow profile at the edges and proportions (a little fatter,) and as noted in the press, it really does feel lighter and more comfortable in my hands. The white one does not pick up as much smudge to boot. And, oh well, let me just say it ... the 3G iPhone is as cool and drool worthy a phone as there is.
Now, I can see how not having access to AT&T's 3G network, nor the funds to pay for the extra $10/month fee, would prompt someone to wait for an even better iPhone and network down the road. And considering that you still have to pay additional fees for texting, which luckily for me I don't care much about, I would not begrudge someone's decision to sit this one out. And if that is your situation, by all means, wait.
But for me, the 3G adds up to a much better ownership proposition; one that is worth every extra penny I spend to own it, to use it, and to enjoy it. An iPhone 3G is a phone I can finally love as a phone. It is the iPhone I always wanted to have; a phone I don't have to apologize for; a phone I am finally proud to call my own.

I agree that the G3 and 2.0 may have been pushed out too soon.
I have two of the original iPhones and was eagerly awaiting the upgrade. Some of the applications looked great and G3 was a gift from heaven.
Then I realized that G3 service was only available in some major metropolitan areas and usually a short distance from a WiFi connection.
I had been really excited about the GPS. (I have collected four Garmins over the years) When I saw how limited the GPS was I knew I would have to keep using what I have.
If I am going to actually use Edge and WiFi most of the time I might as well stay with what I've got until something truly remarkable comes along.
Ever since I have upgraded to 2.0 I have had to contend with an annoying UI latency and sudden crashes I had never experienced before. A hard reset will help for a while, but then the problems come back after a couple of hours of use. Perhaps a memory leak that will be fixed soon.
I think that now I will dump the .apps and try to reinstall 1.2 until Apple can get caught up.
I didn't sign up to beta test buggy software and If I wanted to use something that almost works some of the time, I would have bought a device with Windows Mobile.
I do have patience though, and I believe in Apple, Inc. and I believe it will all work out real soon now.
