Google showed off its new brainchild last week:a smartphone design in collaboration with its Android partners, Taiwan's handset maker HTC, and the wireless carrier T-Mobile USA. The phone specs are all over the place on the Internet. It looks quite attractive, but perhaps because of the Apple iPhone's lasting impression, many tech pundits gave only a "pass" grade on its appearance. The biggest design difference between the iPhone and Google's G1 -- by the way, an unimpressive name that sounds like a robot rather than a personal/lifestyle device -- is the keyboard.

It's got my vote!

I think the overall issue here is that people are primarily focusing on the actual phone. The phone itself is HTC. I have an HTC that has windows mobile on it. What google has made is a operating system for smart phones. Instead of thinking of it as a phone think of it like you do of Windows Mobile 6. What they have done is created an open source (like linux) for phones. It makes sense with the release of Ubuntu and the amount of people flocking towards that distribution while the phone market sits (virtually untapped) with no real competition. Every phone manufacturer goes one of 2 routes. They either load their own OS on it (Nokia, Blackberry, Motorola, and yes even Apple) or they put windows mobile on it. With the increase of phone purchases people have naturally gone more towards Windows Mobile recently. Why? Because it's the same from phone to phone people don't like having to relearn how to use their phone. Apple has a sleek interface but you can only use it on the Iphone. So what Google has done is made an operating system, that could potentially be used across the board on different types of phones. This allows users to have the same experience without having to be restricted to applications like Windows Mobile. I didn't get a chance to pre order but you better believe me I will be getting one as soon as I can!

Good job Google!!!
