Hello,
I'm helping somebody design an e-commerce site.
I know quite a lot about web design, graphics design, etc., but I know next to nothing about e-commerce solutions. Would anybody happen to know of any good (and possibly cheap) shopping cart services?
The e-commerce site that is being designed is a whole sale site, so there will be quite a few products (at least 100).
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Andy

Hi Andy,
I just started using Flying Cart, really quick to get up and running. They say they are launching customizable CSS in 2 weeks - which will be good for further customization of my store. I really like their marketing tools, they allow me to upload to Google product search with one click...

If you’re not a programmer and choose an open source solution, you might end up paying much more than you can imagine. I have been there, paying programmer fees to set up the store, then fees for maintenance and fees for updates, because if you don’t update an open source solution all the time it gets easily hacked. These fees were on top of web hosting, web design, payment processing, security checking and other fees. And I had to do with over 5 different persons if you include the hosting company and a web marketing consultant.
Now, I’m with one of the “software-as-a-service” solutions that offer everything I need for a monthly subscription fee. A powerful ecommerce engine, hosting, support, upgrades, integrated marketing and design tools. I’m very happy with both this model and the services company I’m with, magnetcommerce.com . The only issue is that I don’t have the flexibility I had in the past, when I could ask the programmer to customize anything I wanted. But I don’t complain, I would never go back…
Good luck to your friend's store!

Hello, Andy!
There are many shopping carts using different technologies. You can start from free shoppinga carts such as osCommerce, Zencart. But the don't provide support. If you need support you can buy commercials shopping carts. Some of them listed at http://www.onlyphp.com/browse-22.html. Or you can search Yahoo, MSN for shopping carts.
Thanks.

Hello Andy,
I am aware of one such shopping cart software which is very user friendly and I believe will surely solve your purpose to build an end-to-end ecommerce site. It has all the unique features to support both the wholesale as well as retail clients. Some of its features like quantity discounts will come in real handy for a wholesale client. Visit the product site at http://www.goecart.com/ or contact their US office at 203-336-2284. I am sure this will solve your purpose. Best of luck.

You can find several Open Source solutions at http://www.sourceforge.org in various programming languages, such as Perl, PHP, and even ASP.
.
These e-commcerce packages range from simple shopping cart, to complex cart, billing, catalog and inventory systems.
.

How do you "post" a new message topic in this forum? All I can find is a "reply" button. Thanks!

I too am looking for shopping cart features/software. I am in the process of building my business web site/retail and plan to integrate with paypal, HOWEVER, I am unsure of how to obtain software to do an auto inventory so that I am not over selling products to my clients. (i.e. I have 200 available and a client wants 225 of the item).
Does anyone know of inexpensive software or coding that can be used for this feature? I am new at this; however, I am fairly proud of myself for learning html and building a pretty good site, if I do say so myself! :) This is one of the last issues I must deal with prior to my Grand Opening, and I would really like some input/advice from anyone! :)
Thanks in advance!
Lisa

We use OS-Commerce for most of our clients' sites. Its a fairly good, free system(available from source-forge) with excellent default functionality. Also quite easy to set up. Right out of the "box" it will check to see if a particular item is unavailable in the desired quantities. It will signal this to the user in realtime, as as to the owner via email. Wish you best of luck...
