Re: Apple's Flimsy Excuse for Its Camera-Shy iPod Touch

At Apple's September media event this year, the company introduced iPhone OS 3.1, 30,000 ringtones from major music labels, enhanced Genius technology that does its database magic on apps, and new Genius Mixes for songs. Apple also unveiled iTunes 9, which includes the iTunes LP that adds videos, lyrics, artwork, liner notes, interviews and more to to your digital albums. Then there's Home Sharing for easy media transfers within a home, along with a redesigned iTunes Store. These are all fantastic new additions to the iPhone and iPod experience.

what AT&T wants AT&T gets

The only reason the camera was missing is because AT&T wanted it that way. The same goes for the microphone. That would turn the ipod touch into a wifi phone. I never would have thought Apple would be a sell out.

Like ipod all the same

Though the ipod has no camera, I like it all the same.
The other functions are very good.

Really?

How naive are you, really?

Do you expect that the CEO of ANY company is just going to come out and say that they had problems with one new feature of one of its leading products and so didn't include it? Really?

You do understand what that would do to sales as people decide to put off buying that device until the problems were fixed, and it was included.

Please, you write in this industry, surely you should understand it.

Or are you just trying to pretend that you are smarter than Jobs, by "seeing through" his statement?

You aren't the first to have mentioned this. But most other writers haven't expressed it the way you have. The rest have pretty much understood the situation and have said, that there was nothing else he could have said. Those who understand the situation have from the start. And for the vast majority who don't read the tech sites, or other articles about tech won't know. And guess what, it won't hurt them not to know.

The new iPod Touch's are still major upgrades over the older models, and right now, that's just fine.

It Matters Because There's So Little Competition

Right. I said as much:

"Still, Apple is between a rock and a hard place. Jobs certainly won't settle for a crappy camera in the iPod touch, and if they actually told the world they had a manufacturing problem, sales would most definitely stagnate while people waited for the real next-generation iPod touch. Sure, most parents aren't paying attention, but Apple gets more press than any other tech company. If Apple let the cat out of the bag, the company would lose millions of sales. No doubt about it."

The point? I think it's worthwhile to draw more attention to these things. Apple commands a lot of media attention, and for good reason--the company makes fantastic products that make journalists cheer.

In the MP3 space, Apple doesn't have any major competitors. They dominate the market. As far as I'm concerned, the more people who are aware of Apple's basic product pipeline, the better. Imagine a parent who does a little online research before buying an iPod for a kid--the nano or the touch? One is $50 cheaper and has video. The other so much more, with games, web, email, but no video? What gives? What if the kid likes to take photos? Don't you like photos? There's a reason most every cell phone has a camera built-in. What happens, then, when the mom shells out $200 for an iPod touch and come January finds out there's a built-in camera in the new iPod touch?

I believe that most people will be best served by buying the right device for their needs. And sometimes waiting a while is a good choice. To hear Apple talk, someone might think Apple has no plans to add a camera to the iPod touch -- and we know that's asinine thinking. But someone Googling the issue . . . might not realize this likely possibility.

And the super popular David Pogue? He posted his interview with Jobs and only subtly asked about the camera in the iPod touch issue. He most definitely reaches non-tech industry consumers, and he let Jobs slide with the price-point, gaming device excuse -- after Jobs gushed about video on stage. Pogue's not going to anger Jobs, of course, and we know that . . . but still, where's the straight talk here?

I tend to think it's worthwhile pointing these things out -- because someone who might not constantly follow the tech press might search, find it, and end up a happier customer overall.
