Android will be the No. 2 smartphone OS by 2012, according to Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney! This fall's march of the Androids notwithstanding, the open OS now accounts for less than 2 percent of all smartphones, according to a recent report. In three years, however, it will make up more than 14 percent, beating Apple, Microsoft and RIM and second only to Symbian, Gartner predicted. Beating the iPhone?! Now that's something to smile about.

General Specific

I would hesitate to make comments about general software platforms based on single incidents...tempting as it may be.

I find .NET useful for working within a Windows network. It really shines as an SOA glue. A Gui here, a web service there. Like that.

Java can do the same...and I use Java in the same fashion, especially with a large API server. Building connectivity, interfaces and so on.

I have a Linux desktop at home ... openSuse. I was watching a DVD on it yesterday. I just installed the Hulu Desktop for Linux as well to stream tv. The barrier to Linux adoption is only mindset. The technology is here...

What the public needs is a Freescale netbook, for $200, with instant on Linux pre-installed.
